Åkesta Observatory

Åkesta Observatory was built in 1939 by the amateur astronomer Åke Odelberg, and this ”star house” is one of Sweden’s oldest privately owned observatories. In 1979 it was donated to Västerås Municipality and since 1989 it has been run by Västerås Astronomy and Space Research Society (VARF). The observatory is in Skultunavägen, about 4km from Norrleden.

The observatory is open to the public free of charge from November to March every cloud-free Thursday between 7pm and 9pm.

You can also make group bookings, and in the event of bad weather, space is presented in the form of slide shows, films, photographs and other interesting material mainly from NASA and JPL.
