The Botanical Garden

The Botanical Garden is situated between Rudbeckianska School and the City Library, just north-east of the Cathedral. It is Sweden’s oldest student garden and was commissioned by Johannes Rudbeckius.

Students have been acquiring knowledge from here since the 18th century. The garden was used for growing cabbages until it was destroyed by fire in 1714.

The Botanical Garden, Västerås
In the mid-18th century, one of Carl Von Linné’s apostles, Carlbaum, lay out a Hortus botanicus here. At the beginning of the 20th century the garden was developed into a high-class botanical garden, with the help of, among others, professor Rutger Sernander.

There is a map of the Botanical Garden in the City Library.
