Västerås slott
This castle, dating from the 13th century, is situated just a stone’s throw from the city centre. When Gustav Vasa took it over in the mid-16th century it was in an extremely bad state after all the battles and sieges. In 1544, Price Erik, the successor to the throne, was given his own room in the castle, which was called ”Unge herrens gemak” (young gentleman’s state apartment). |

From 14 June 1573 to 16 October 1574, Erik XIV was imprisoned at Västerås Castle. He sat in this ”dark prison” separated from his consort Karin Månsdotter and their children. The king was then moved to Örbyhus and poisoned with pea soup. He was later buried in Västerås cathedral. The castle now houses the residence of the County Governor.
