Västerås Steam Power Plant
a strong and mighty industrial monument. As you approach Västerås from Lake Mälaren you will notice a high tower with four flues on the top. It is the old steam power plant, once an important part of Sweden’s energy supply and now a certified historic building.

This magnificent building, designed by Erik Hahr at the beginning of the 20th century, houses a completely unique exhibition of a fossil fuelled steam power plant that reflects the period when such power plants were built, from the 1910s up to 1960 when nuclear power took over.
In 1982 the power plant was taken out of operation – it had done its duty in supplying Sweden with electricity. But its days weren’t over as a monument that represented they heyday of Swedish industrial history. It now houses an exhibition of a significant era in the history of power generation, a unique collection that would probably not be easy to find elsewhere in the world. The steam power plant was certified an historic building in 1999 and now parts of the building are being reconstructed to make it commercially viable, without losing any of the valuable technical parts. The organization Ångkraftverkets Vänner (Friends of the Steam Power Plant) works to describe and preserve this unique technology. Read more about the steam power station» Future plans for the steam power station Together with Västerås Stad, KTH, Mälardalen University, ABB and other companies, organizations and authorities, Peab plans to turn the culturally historic steam power plant into a unique adventure centre. Studies on the intelligent use of energy will be side by side with a water park, an exhibition on the earth’s climate, an energy museum, restaurants, cafés, shops and much more besides. Because of ongoing construction work, it is not possible to visit the plant at present. |
